IT’S easy to forget about caring for your garden structures when other jobs, like removing weeds and cutting the grass, tend to dominate your attention. It is the structure of your garden which sets the foundations for it to blossom and it also needs to be taken care of. This week Peter Barratt’s gives you top tips on how to maintain the essentials.
Wooden products in your garden will be subject to rot unless they are protected. Oil or water-based preservatives should be used to protect fences, sheds and other wooden features
Make sure you regularly clean patios and other hard surfaces to get rid of moss and algae. If this is not done it may result in these surfaces becoming slippery and dangerous during winter
To clean garden paving all you need to use is a stiff brush with water. Remember to check paving stones every three months for any loose or damaged stones and to ensure joining material is still intact
If you have a greenhouse it’s a good idea to install heating. It will prolong the growing season and you will be able to work in there in the colder months
When installing a greenhouse you need to make sure that you check the foundations thoroughly to ensure that it is mouse-proof. There should be no small spaces and it should be airtight
Maintaining greenhouses is also essential. Guttering needs to be regularly checked for blockages, broken glass panes should be immediately replaced and all cleaning should be done with biodegradable soap. Other substances may be harmful to plants
If any weeds manage to grow on to your garden path use a strong weed killer such as glyphosate to kill them. It has been found to be less toxic than other herbicides. A rake is all that is needed to put back gravel and chippings that have travelled to the edges of the path or become compacted together.
