Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) This very vigorous, deciduous self-clinger has bright green leaves which turn brilliant red and deep purple in autumn, and is perfect for covering a large north or east-facing wall. It grows to 20m (70ft) high and 20m (70ft) wide, so will need pruning to keep it in check. Boston ivy can be grown in any fertile, well-drained soil in sun or shade. Young plants need to be guided with support until they cling for themselves. Established plants are an important wildlife habitat for insects and small birds. They should be pruned in late winter if necessary.
