I've done really well losing weight slowly but surely over the last year but I just can't shift the last half-stone. Do you have any advice? First of all I need to say well done. You've lost weight the most healthy way and the way that's most likely to produce long-term results. If you lose weight slowly, you're far less likely to put it back on again. It probably means you haven't been excessively deprived over the year. Now to consider your last half-stone. First of all you might like to ponder whether you really have to shift it at all. If you were to look at a height/weight chart it's conceivable you're already well within the healthy weight band for your height. If this is the case, ask yourself whether you wouldn't be better off just holding your weight steady as it is. There are risks to working on that last half-stone. If you've reached a plateau you'll clearly need to drop your food intake or increase your exercise (or both) and that might just be too hard. If you try it and begin to feel deprived you might just tip yourself back into binge mode, which would be a crying shame after all this effort. On the other hand, if you really want to shed a few more pounds I can give you some tips as to what you might try while at the same time avoiding deprivation. Some of the calories we eat are hidden calories. In other words, they're calories that you wouldn't even notice if you gave them up. Let me set you thinking so you can work on your own diet and find your hidden calories. Say you make your own sandwiches for lunch and you are used to first spreading butter or margarine. I challenge you to skip the butter or margarine and put the filling straight on without it. You won't even notice the difference. If you eat your sandwiches at home, try an open sandwich, Scandinavian-style, to save one slice of bread. If you hate the idea of cutting out the butter or marg completely, try just cutting it down slowly. Use a little less each week until it's no more than a scraping. Also, very often our portions of pasta and rice are much much larger than the recommended size on the packet. As a rule of thumb a normal portion of pasta or rice is a fistful.
