This week I would like to take a little time to discuss the merits of using boxing training as a template for your fitness routine.
As a sport, boxing is considered intense and extremely demanding physically and mentally, but there are many elements of boxing that can be utilised in your fitness training no matter what your goals are.
I should begin by saying that I do not expect you all to rush out to the nearest boxing club and return home with a broken nose; just listen to some of the benefits that can result from using boxing exercises and maybe give them a go yourself.
Most gyms and sports centres offer some form of boxing training and while the content and quality of these classes can vary wildly, they will serve you fine as a starting point. If you cannot make it to a local class many of the related exercises such as skipping, press-ups and shadow boxing can be done at home without any expensive equipment. Boxing training is effective because it uses the human body so well. The physical workout targets our muscles in various different ways, the controlled aggression can relieve stress and tension and the various exercises work together to improve our balance, co-ordination and reflexes. It is for these reasons so many athletes from other sports incorporate boxing training into their schedule. If you want to get fit, get boxing.
Once again, a good starting place is a local boxing club or boxercise class. (In boxercise/boxing circuits classes you will do all of the training without sparring or punching each other and these are excellent for those looking purely to improve fitness levels). A typical training session will involve a range of exercises targeting the whole body; you will work on muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular conditioning (your heart and lungs) and exercises to help you be more graceful and co-ordinated. If you find a good coach they will advise you on how to stand and move, as well as slowly improving your performance and fitness as the weeks progress. This is not something you will excel in overnight. However, if you persevere there is so much to be gained from this type of training.
I hope that this has made you consider giving boxing training a try, you may surprise yourself at how much you like it.
