As mentioned last week, over the next few weeks we will talk about healthy eating, with advice based around the Healthy Living Programme that is offered to members here at Greens.
The first point is one that many people will ask themselves almost every day: Why am I eating when I'm not hungry? Is it psychological? When people are asked why they eat, most say that they are bored, suffering from anxiety, comfort eating or simply being sociable.
So, if you're feeling a little down this could lead to weight gain, but if you are already overweight this can leave you feeling low. You can help yourself to avoid this predicament by becoming more active. If you're in the house try going for a walk, go to the gym or try a fitness video at home. These may be corny, but they provide the basics of a good light fitness regime.
One thing that you must remember is that comfort eating and anxiety are linked. For example, last time you felt low did you get some chocolate to cheer yourself up?
Do you have a busy social life? Work away? You think you will never lose weight because your life is too hectic? Think again! All these excuses can be overcome with organisation. What will you eat and when will you eat it? Breakfast, lunch and evening meal, with healthy snacks in between, not forgetting to drink lots of water. This will also take away the hunger feeling so if you're tempted to cheat before lunch, drink a glass of water.
One final point is how much you're going to eat. Just because you have nice big plates it does not mean you have to cover it all with food. Yes, I'm guilty of it too! Prep time, cooking time and eating your food is all part of the fun, so enjoy it in reasonable portions.
Next week: FAT!!!
