The 38-year-old Canadian-born country star is one of the most successful singers in the world. She is only one of four women who have sold more than 12 million copies of an album.
When she was 21, both her parents were killed in a car crash, so she put her career on hold to bring up her teenage brothers and a sister. Then she moved to the States to become a music sensation.
Freamwork:
The tiny (she's 5ft 3in) star gets her good looks from her Irish and French-Canadian background. Beauty experts say her most striking feature is perfect eyebrows which top her sparkling green eyes and high cheekbones. She has a perfectly-toned stomach which she enjoys showing off. "When I first showed my midriff, my record company was horrified," she says. "They said I was intimidating to women and that my image was far too sexy."
She is credited with making country and western music sexy. "I enjoy wearing attention-grabbing, skin-baring outfits on stage. I refuse to play down the way I look in order to be taken seriously as an artist."
Despite her stunning figure, she is critical about her looks. "I think my body is in proportion, but I wish I had better legs. They are not very shapely."
Earlier this year she was voted the sexiest female in Canada according to a poll of 500 Canadian beer drinkers, and she was voted the sexiest vegetarian alive by PETA. She says she feels sexiest when getting out of the bath. "Your skin is fresh and you've put up your hair without looking."
Exercise:
Jumping about on stage is great exercise she says, but she gets more by riding one of her two horses. "Horse riding through the forests of New York State is my great passion. In winter I burn up the calories through downhill skiing."
Diet:
Shania is vegetarian (even her pet dogs are served veggie food) so it's lots of salads, vegetable soups, fruit and meatless Italian dishes made with eggless pasta. For puddings, it's mostly country apple pie the way her mother used to bake it. "I like being at home and cooking, but these days I don't get much chance to bury my head in a good recipe book."
She's teetotal now having given up drinking in her late teens. "To be honest, I was never much of a drinker, although as a teenager I had my pukey mornings."
Love-life:
She's been married for 10 years to record executive Robert `Mutt' Lange (best-known for producing Def Leppard, Bryan Adams and Backstreet Boys). He saw one of her videos and fell for her. For two months they wrote songs over the phone. She had no idea who he was, though she knew he was 16 years her senior. Six months after they first met, they were married. They have a two-year-old son, Eja (pronounced Asia).
