With spring just around the corner, you can wave goodbye to last season's dramatic and sensuous make-up - remember the dark purple lip stains, smouldering eyes and matching red lips? The upcoming season sees a brighter, more luminous look, with vivid hues on the eyes, while lips stay quite nude, and cheeks are flushed, with a little help from a stain. But we saw all that last summer, so what's new this time round? "Spring sees a return to fairy-like femininity, reminiscent of a magical era with pastel, natural tones," explains renowned make-up artist Ashley Ward, who has worked with Kate Winslet, Reese Witherspoon and the London, New York, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks. "This enchanted, natural beauty look celebrates nude, dewy colours and a focus on all things pretty." But what other looks are in? We've rounded up the hottest looks that you'll want to copy.
Rosy chic Queen of the natural look, Bobbi Brown, will be championing Rosy Chic this season. "The spring look is romantic and rosy, to reflect the trend we saw in the ladylike and feminine clothes at the Fashion Shows. When a woman wears rose, I want her to feel soft, pretty and very feminine," she says. "Rose is universally flattering, there's a shade of rose for every skin tone. And it's a look that translates easily for real-life wear. "Neutral shimmer on eyes, a rosy, sheer stain on lips, and a sweep of rose shimmer on cheeks." Stock up on: Bobbi Brown's limited edition Rose Lip Gloss, £13, Red Earth's Rosy Refresh cheek and lip stain, £10 from House of Fraser, or Stila Spring Compact in Lotus Blossom, £19. ********** Barely there Fresh, luminous skin is the definition of beauty this season, but looking natural does not mean going au naturel, so take advice from Ashley. "To really flaunt it and achieve that healthy, post-holiday glow that makes us look good and feel radiant, you need to start by creating the perfect base," she says. "Eyes should be kept simple and natural, defined with almond and nude shades, while you should choose nude, barely-there and warm caramel shades so that the natural pink of your lips shines through." Stock up on: Max Factor Earth Spirits eyeshadow in Almond or Pebble, £4.50, Bobbi Brown's Nude On Nude Shimmer Wash Eyeshadow Palette, £36, Laura Mercier's Creme Lip Colour in Pink Mist, £15 from Space NK. ********** Vibrant eyes This dazzling palette of colours makes a bold statement. "More full-on than Flower Fairy pretty, this metamorphosis into brilliance may take its flight from 70s Biba - not 80s Boy George," explains MAC's Charlotte Tilbury. On Elspeth Gibson and Alberta Ferreti catwalks, lashes were painted purple, while there were lashings of green and blue at the other shows. So go crazy and pick the colour that suits you best. Stock up on: Lancome's Sea, Sun and Sand Eye and Lip palette, £28.50, Dior's Tropical 5-Colour Eyeshadow compact, £32, or Estee Lauder's Pure Color Eyeshadow in Orchid in the new Primitive Instinct range, £13.50. ********* Candy colours Pretty pastel shades, inspired by strawberry bon-bons, pink bubblegum and fizzy peach - and the tropical fashions which we'll see later on in the season - are popular again this spring, and will make you look good enough to eat. Brunettes can look yummy in baby blue and bubblegum pink, while redheads sparkle in peach and pistachio and darker skins will suit violet and candyfloss pink. Stock up on: Versace's Lights On Lips lipgloss in pink or peach, £16, or Givenchy Pop Fuchsia Gloss Crystal lipgloss, £13.50. ********* What about nails? "Nail trends this season are influenced by earthy colours, such as cocoa shades. Browns and bronzes have proved to be really popular," says nail technician Glenis Baptiste, who works at London Fashion Week. But a wash of pearlescent pink or peach nail polish on manicured nails will suit everyone. Stock up on: Max Factor's Nailfinity in Modernist Pink, £5.50, MAC's frosty coral Up Mode nail lacquer, £8, or No7 Stay Perfect nail colour in Molten, £6 from Boots. |
