YOUR exclusive beauty and grooming tips from Mac cosmetics senior make-up artist, Sunderland-born Caroline Donnelly. AS I’ve had some time off this week I don’t have much to say about my week, unless I talk about housework and gardening! BUT! I am packing and sorting and cleaning my kit out to fly to Las Vegas for a global senior artist (Senior Artist is my job title – we make up the Global MAC Pro Team) workshop. Very exciting! I didn’t know what to expect as it’s the first of it’s kind, but I’ve received my agenda and it looks fab! Loads of workshops, Q and A’s, and demos – all directly related to our jobs. We’re even doing a photo shoot while out there. I’ve still to find out the finer details of activities when we all arrive from around the world on Saturday. It’ll be a great experience to receive tips from people who specialise in certain fields of make up, watch how they work and pick their brains. I feel very lucky that these workshops have been put together for us as this is a unique and special experience for us to develop and learn as artists. It’s important to remember that people never stop learning and having an open mind to different techniques and styles will benefit everybody there and help us grow. All this, and Las Vegas! I will write more next week. Q. What colours should I be wearing for autumn/winter? I work in an office during the day but like to dress my eyes up on the evening. A. I’m presuming you’re looking for ideas about dressing your eyes up after leaving work in the office? If I’m wrong, email me and let me know, and we can continue! I can think of two great trends for this autumn/winter which will transform your look easily for you to feel more made up and glamorous for the evening. For the office, a trend MAC have named as Photoshaped would be perfect as it isn’t too made up looking and can be achieved quite easily if you’re pressed for time in the mornings. It’s this coming season’s take on natural. This is a very considered make up with a lot of thought behind it, but once your look has been decided upon, can be done without too much time being needed. Consider how you want to interpret this trend creating make up around different light sources. Think about shadow and highlights and how different light sources create different shapes and shades. For instance; think of black and white cinematography, overhead lighting, highlighting and sepia photographs and how the shadows or highlights look around the eyes, and the bone structure of the face. It could perhaps be shadow under the eye and cheekbones in a matte colour, with a satiny highlight on the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose. Keep the skin immaculate, as perfect and poreless as possible and use light and shade to create a really 3D face. Texture is absolutely important to this trend to create interest and another dimension to what could be quite a nude face. To take your office make up to a different place, I’m going to describe another trend MAC have identified this coming season, named Taylored. This trend is a real nod to Elizabeth Taylor and her gorgeous, smouldering beauty. Think of her hypnotic stare and those intense eyes – this trend is slightly Egyptian in places. This is the other side of the cinematic influence we’ve seen in the trend Photoshaped and is all about the eyes for a modern take on a smokey or darkened eye. Camouflage colours were big players – look for MAC eye shadows in Velvet Moss, Femme Noir, Embark, Fiction and Carbon. Eyes can be winged out to exaggerate their size and Blacktrack Fluidline is perfect if you feel you'd like to include a line and go feline in shape. If you’re not confident at applying technical make up, keep it imperfect, not too precise and slightly rawer to make it feel more rock ‘n’ roll. Lips can have colour, and brick reds look great with this look this season, but if you prefer, keep them soft and nude (MAC Lip Conditioners are perfect) for a more languid beauty.
