Dear Caroline

YOUR exclusive beauty and grooming tips from Mac cosmetics senior make-up artist, Sunderland-born Caroline Donnelly.

THIS week, I thought I’d talk a little about male grooming. Men are becoming more conscious of their appearance and comfortable about caring for the way they look.

More men are booking regular hair appointments, buying make-up, visiting beauty salons and receiving treatments such as facials, waxing, pedicures and manicures.

Celebrity influences our society so much that with men like David Beckham as role models, it is more accepted men may devote as much care and attention to their appearance as women.

Make-up can be worn as though it were invisible for any men not wanting to look made up, simply by choosing the right products.

For dark circles try Mac’s Moisturecover Concealer under the eyes. This will help fake a good eight hours’ sleep.

This is a super, easy-to-blend, moisturising concealer with a built-in brush-tipped wand applicator which will help you put the product exactly where you want it. The concealer is so lightweight and natural, no one need know it’s been worn. After applying the product under the eyes, and anywhere else that may need a little coverage (try around the nose), tap product in using the ring finger, but better still, use a Mac #194 brush to blend.

To stop skin looking shiny throughout the day, try Blot Powder to matt down skin and provide shine control without adding any noticeable colour or texture.

To keep brows looking groomed try Brow Finisher or Brow Set. Brow Finisher is a slimline wax-style grooming tool formulated to shape and hold the brows in place while giving a slick, polished finish. This comes in clear or slightly tinted, but try clear if you’re new to this. Brow Set is an alternative to Brow Finisher. It’s a brush-on gel that grooms and slicks eyebrows into shape. For those people whose brows could do with some colour or help with the shape, try MAC Eye Brow pencil.

Finally, keep the Lip Conditioner Stick Spf15 handy and apply to avoid chapped and dry looking lips. The most local Mac counters are in Fenwick, Newcastle, and House of Fraser, MetroCentre.

Q. My girlfriend raves about your products and won’t buy anything else. I was wondering, do you do a men’s range of skin care?

A. Mac’s mantra is All Races, All Sexes, All Ages, so the range is for absolutely everybody. Packaged in no-nonsense, sleek modern packaging, the products suggest neither male nor female, so won’t look out of place in anyone’s bathroom. Men have been shopping in MAC since the day the brand launched and never more so than now. Men who perhaps wouldn’t have considered shopping for good skincare or makeup are coming round to the idea that looking good isn’t just a female thing. Who wouldn’t want to make the best of themselves? It’s the same as going for a haircut or shopping for the perfect pair of jeans.

The first and most obvious place to start is with your skincare. Choosing a good cleanser or face wash will help balance the skin and remove impurities.

There are many types of cleansers to choose, but I often find men prefer face wash. To keep it simple – if your skin needs a more hydrating formula, try Cremewash; if your skin is prone to spots or can become oily, try Green Gel Cleanser.

Your skin will feel fresh and squeaky clean after using either of these morning and night. Follow the cleansing by applying a good moisturiser. Mac has a lot on offer, so I’ll give you some simple advice, but ask a Mac retail artist in store.

Studio Moisture Fix (with or without SPF15) is good for any skin type and a lightweight, super-hydrating, fast-absorbing moisturiser. Studio Moisture Cream is a rich, creamy moisturiser, suitable for all skin types. Oil Control Lotion is the ultimate, no-shine base for oil control, perfect for oilier skin types.

I’d suggest Fast Response Eye Cream to anyone. It’s a must-have product, especially in the morning to de-puff, firm, soothe and soften the skin around the eyes. Its caffeine base also helps to erase the look of dark circles.

It has instant effects and I wouldn’t leave home without wearing it! Prep and Prime Skin is a fab product to help improve the look of the skin, applied after moisturiser. It helps to calm and soothe the skin and evens out skin redness, while lessening the appearance of pores.
