Yesterday, myself and a few colleagues were working at the fabulously glamorous Soho Hotel on Trends Presentations for journalists and Press people.
These presentations were designed by MAC's UK Press team to help make journalists' lives easier when trying to decipher between trends for the coming season.
MAC have a team of people who spend hour upon hour going through all the backstage fashion week footage as seen in New York, London, Milan and Paris and take every single make-up seen into account and break them up into trends to make them easier to understand and identify. Yesterday this was shown to those mentioned in the form of video footage, a spoken presentation and examples of each, on models brought in for the day from agencies. Myself and three other colleagues had a model each and took a look from fashion week which demonstrated an example of each of the four trends identified for Autumn Winter '07/'08. Working with hairdressers and a stylist, the models are made up to look as if they have just come off the runway from four different shows with the hair perfectly re-created, and the actual clothes from the collections provided by the designers on loan to the stylist. The four looks we presented were taken from Preen, Christopher Cane, Jonathan Saunders and Alexander McQueen.
I did the makeup (created originally by make-up artist Miranda Joyce) for Jonathan Saunders. This was one of the shows I worked on backstage in London.
The trend, MAC named Techno Colour, is all about plugged-in colours that take the purest of pigments and treat them as if they have a light bursting through them. They are electric, yet sheer. Think of coloured perspex and this will give you the idea. Backstage, Jonathan Saunders' models had their skin perfected with MAC Select Cover Up concealer applied and a small amount of a gorgeous dark green eye kohl named Tarnish, sparingly applied around and inside the eyes. MAC Zoomlash was applied to the lashes for extra definition, but the focus of the make-up was the eyebrows. But not as you'd expect! MAC Pro Paint Sticks in Primary Yellow or Pink Vivid were applied through the brows, depending on what they were wearing. Although I love the pink brow and I'd love to see some people take it on, I realise this isn't a look for everybody. It may be that a slick of hot pink eye shadow or a hot pink lip may be the way to wear it. Make it your own!
Q. I travel and work in hotter climates a lot, so I tend to have an all-year-round tan. Although I wear sun protection on my body, I absolutely sun block my face. I'm very cautious of sun damage. Although my face is also tanned, it is much, much lighter in colour than my body. How do I choose a foundation? I've been making a lot of expensive mistakes. Also, I'd like one that doesn't have too much coverage.
A. MAC have a product that would be absolutely ideal for you. Select Tint SPF 15 (note the SPF in it too) is a lightweight sheer-moisturising tint, which is water-based and oil free.
Select SPF 15 also contains conditioners and will help to hydrate the face, which I feel would be something of importance to you as the heat of the sun can often have drying effects on the skin. One of the beauties of this product is, because of the lightweight coverage, you can go a bit deeper in colour than your natural complexion, which will even up your skin tone.
Get help when choosing your colour. The MAC make-up artists will take into account the colour on your chest and arms, helping you to achieve a natural blended look, and this will help you to avoid the `orange' look, which is something I'm guessing you don't want.
I love the MAC £187 brush with Select Tint SPF 15 to achieve a light application and the MAC £191 or £190 brush for slightly more coverage. For your information, MAC have a Prep and Prime Face Protectant SPF 50 which make-up artists went crazy for when we introduced it backstage at shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris.
Apply the Protectant under the make-up, it is easily absorbed, helps create a gorgeous look to the skin (hence the popularity backstage) and has a factor 50 sun protection. What more could you want!
