CONCERT-goers and artistes alike will remember promising young footballer Jordan Thompson at this weekend’s 3 Bandstand concert – exactly a week after the 15-year-old lost his 19-month fight against acute myeloid leukaemia . Jordan – who was signed-up by Newcastle United – had been hoping to attend 3 Bandstand, a Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) event he was heavily involved in last year after helping to make a DVD of the show, which featured world famous entertainers such as Paul Weller, Jools Holland, Johnny Vegas, Roger Daltrey and Tim Healy. Jordan had been given the all-clear in April this year after months of intensive chemotherapy, but six weeks later he was told his best possible chance of remaining well would be a bone marrow transplant, which he underwent on July 20. But despite initial hopes that the transplant had been successful, Jordan died of a secondary infection at the oncology unit at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary on September 15. Mum Andrea says: “He was absolutely fine in terms of the transplant. His body had accepted the donor bone marrow but he contracted a massive infection.” Jordan’s family are hoping to attend this weekend’s 3 Bandstand. Andrea says: “Jordan would always tell anyone that the Trust had given him so much. It was all the great people he met through the Trust, all the nurses, other patients on the Teenage Cancer Unit at the RVI and the friends he made that made him feel like that.” Jordan, of West Denton, Newcastle, was initially diagnosed on Valentine’s Day 2006. He completed his treatment on May 28 last year after chemotherapy, during which Andrea and dad Dave were able to spend 24 hours a day at his bedside at the Teenage Cancer Unit. Andrea says: “The RVI unit is a lovely, lovely place and even when he was in remission, Jordan visited the ward every week and was able to go on visits to places like Center Parcs, which he said had been the best holiday of his life.” Jordan had been due to direct this year’s film at 3 Bandstand before he underwent the transplant. North-East film director Geoff Wonfor has described the teenager as one of the most talented youngsters he had come across. He said: “Jordan had so much going for him. Within an-hour-and-a-half behind the camera you could tell he had something.” Andrea added: “Jordan would have wanted us to support Bandstand.” * Tickets for 3 Bandstand, which takes place at the Sage Gateshead on September 22, are priced at £60/£40, and are available from www.teenagecancertrust.org/bandstand; www.ticketmaster.co.uk; www.thesagegateshead.co.uk or by calling (0191) 443-4661.
