There’s something for everyone in Gosforth

May 17 2008

by The Journal

Gosforth offers something to suit all tastes, whether it’s work, rest or play. Aranda Garrard discovers more about living in an area with everything on the doorstep.

A THRIVING suburb of Newcastle, Gosforth has something for everyone, whether it’s for work, rest or play.

The area has a good mix of factory work, healthcare and office work, with the largest source of employment being in healthcare.

Many businesses have offices in the Regent Centre, including the headquarters of Northern Rock, and Greggs the bakers.

Therefore it’s no surprise that at 5pm, many workers spill out into the nearest bars and restaurants.

The Three Mile Inn is a favourite, along with The Job Bulman. The Job Bulman is in the former 1920s post office on St Nicholas Avenue.

Gosforth has a wealth of sporting venues too, such as a swimming pool, and the City of Newcastle Golf Club among others.

The High Street has had numerous makeovers in recent years, culminating in the town square at Trinity Church and its associated Loch Fyne restaurant, a renowned seafood restaurant and fishmongers.

Further retail additions within the shopping centre has seen Sainsbury’s move in and a new piano shop.

For schools, there is Gosforth High School, and Westfield School. The area has the highest proportion of degree-educated people in the country, and has always been respected for its high calibre schools.

St Nicholas Hospital houses the Victorian Grade II listed Jubilee Theatre.

Built in 1899, it has played host to many stars, including Laurel and Hardy. Iain Allison, branch manager of Reeds Rains Gosforth, said: "Gosforth is a diverse area with regards to culture and housing, and will always be popular with buyers.

"It’s more family-orientated with less of a student presence, than Jesmond, so it’s sometimes regarded as its "richer", cousin.

"House prices range from £100,000 to more than £1,000,000. An average three-bedroom, semi- detached home will cost between £190,000 and £220,000.

"The recent influx of new-build housing has seen prices soar with Newcastle’s Great Park seeing the greatest variety of pricing.

"We could see dramatic changes in the North Gosforth area in the near future.

"Although the market is slow, there is still a demand for every style of home. We are seeing a sudden upturn in demand for rental property. With flats and apartments ranging from £500pcm upwards, the jump to three-bedroom properties is not much further away, beginning at £700pcm."

Media professional Alex Taylor lives in Delaval Terrace, Gosforth. He said: "Gosforth is a great place to live. It’s close to the city centre with good bus and Metro links. The High Street has some great restaurants, pubs, shops, and an art gallery. Gosforth Central Park and the Town Moor provides plenty of recreational space.

"The mix of Victorian, Edwardian and modern streets are safe, well-lit and quieter than those in livelier Jesmond.

"Streets near Salters Road and Ashburton Road have a village feel, while the NE3 postcode is home to some of the city's finest properties and high prices.

"There are plenty of churches, and a synagogue, while just 10 minutes away is Gosforth Park Racecourse and the Marriott Hotel.

"The A1 gives easy access to the rest of the region."
