The very height of Victorian style in Jesmond

Jul 31 2010

by Mieka Smiles, The Journal

BRANDLING Park House is a family home full of personality and unusual quirks. Built in 1890, owners John and Judith Porteous have kept many of the original features of the five-storey Victorian town house.

The four-bedroom property has fantastic views of Brandling Park and the bowling green directly opposite.

The home has been owned by John since 1991 and the couple have lived there together for 12 years, alongside their Siamese cats, Milly and Tilly.

Brandling Park House is in the sought-after area of central Jesmond, close to the centre of Newcastle.

“It’s a fantastic location,” said Judith.

“Its very easy to walk into town, you can walk to the universities, the shops, the famous Quayside. There are also the bars and restaurants, and the famous culture and nightlife.

“You can walk into town in high heels in a quarter of an hour!”

Judith explains how the stunning views and personality of Brandling Park House helped her fall in love with the home: “The lounge is definitely my favourite room. All along one side are the large original windows, overlooking the park, so the room is always lovely and bright, especially over the summer months.

“It’s just a lovely place to sit and look across the park.

“The house is very spacious with all the rooms on different levels. It’s very individual and definitely a one-off.”

John and Judith share a lot of happy memories together in Brandling Park House.

John said: “Judith and I have been married for seven years, and we walked down the aisle to God Only Knows by Prefab Sprout.

“Years later Martin McAloon, the lead singer, actually sang the song for us in our living room.”

The couple have kept many of the original features of the house, including the original skirting boards, windows and some of the floorboards.

Across the many levels the home boasts an entrance hall, lounge, kitchen, luxury bathroom, office and four bedrooms, including an en-suite bathroom in the top-floor master bedroom. Judith, who is a project manager for the Newcastle United Foundation, believes the house to be unique in Jesmond as it offers a basement, garage and garden at the front.

The two are sad to be leaving the house and the Jesmond area behind, but are forced to move for family concerns.

“The reason we’re moving is because John’s mum took ill a while ago and we were considering moving her into the house, but she needs a home with fewer levels to climb.

“It’s sad to have to leave Jesmond. It’s a great social area and we have fantastic neighbours here, so it’s sad to leave them. We don’t plan to move too far so we can still keep in touch.

“There’s a lot of community spirit here. The neighbours all know each other and there’s always something going on.”

John added: “It’s an individual house, it’s a one-off. It works for families and couples. It’s a house with character, and so is Jesmond.”

Brandling Park House, Jesmond, Newcastle, is for sale through Pattinson at £650,000, tel: 0845 146 1591.
