A NEW scheme has been announced this week by the Renewable Energy Association, which will effectively pay people for the heat they generate themselves.
Due to start in April 2011, the scheme, known as the renewable heat incentive will pay a fixed amount per year to households and businesses who install renewable heat equipment. It will be backdated to July 2009.
There will also be payments for every unit of gas fed into the gas network.
Payments last from 10-23 years. This means an average household could be paid at least £1,000 per year for 15 years for installing and using a wood chip boiler. Today, renewable heat meets 0.6% of UK demand, but by 2020 the Government aims to meet 12% or more of the UK’s heat demand through renewables.
Mike Blakeley of The Wood Heating Company in Cramlington, said: “With one of Europe’s largest man-made forests (Kielder) on our doorstep, this could easily make the North East the UK’s leading region for biomass heating.
“With this new scheme, people are effectively going to get free heating and hot water for 15 years, as well as a return on capital. You’ll get a pay-back on your investment as quickly as four years, then the remaining 11 years at better than free heating and hot water.”
