Woodlands in splendid seclusion

Oct 11 2008

by Francesca Craggs, The Journal

WHEN it comes to buying a home, location, location, location is key. And what better location than Vic and Freda Crew’s stone-built bungalow in the heart of the Tyne Valley.

The couple bought Woodlands, near Fourstones village, close to Hexham, 10 years ago and have since transformed it into their dream home. Nestled in a woodland setting with stunning views, the property really does offer the best of both worlds.

Freda said: "The house has a wonderful secluded location, yet we are just three miles from Hexham and 25 minutes from the airport. It’s so peaceful and totally private. We are south- facing so the house has a lovely sunny aspect and we get lots of wildlife including red squirrels. It’s secluded but not isolated."

The detached property is set in two-thirds of an acre and is well-presented throughout. Accommodation includes an entrance hall with T-shaped hallway, sitting room with French doors and brick-built fireplace housing an oil- fired stove. There is also a conservatory leading to a decked area, and dining room.

"My favourite room in the house is probably the bathroom. It has a Jacuzzi bath and is a lovely luxurious spot," said Freda. "I love to cook so I also like the kitchen. It has a walk-in pantry and utility room which is very handy. The conservatory is a lovely spot from which to watch the wildlife."

The kitchen is fitted with cream coloured Shaker units and features integrated units. There is also a cloakroom and rear lobby.

The family bathroom was recently refurbished to include a Jacuzzi bath and a range of built-in vanity units. There are two bedrooms with en suite shower rooms, and a third bedroom at present used as a study. The property also has planning permission for a loft conversion.

Freda said: "It’s a very low maintenance property inside and out and would suit a range of buyers from families to retired couples. We have family and grandchildren and they just love it here. We have good local schools as well as the senior school in Hexham which always gets good Ofsted results."

The gardens and grounds are a particular feature of the property and features a large garage block and attached workshop.

"The gardens are beautiful all year round," Freda added. "They incorporate a small orchard with plum and apple trees. We have our very own Christmas trees which sparkle with frost on a winter’s night. It really is a magical place."

The couple have thought long and hard about selling Woodlands, but feel now is the right time.

"We are still fit and able so have decided to downsize. We enjoy travelling and sailing and are looking to move on to the next phase of our lives.

"We’ve had 10 fantastically happy years here and I’m sure whoever buys the house will be extremely happy here too."

Fourstones is for sale through RPS Residential at a guide price of £525,000, tel: (01434) 608980.
