Stable life at Acton Hall

Jul 12 2008

by Francesca Craggs, The Journal

DETERMINATION, inspiration and a great deal of hard work have transformed Acton Hall Stables.

The beautiful property – rebuilt from a former stable block – and its stunning gardens have provided not just a home for John and Lynne Murray and their daughter Fiona, but an idyllic lifestyle. They bought the spectacular small rural estate near Morpeth, Northumberland, 13 years ago.

John said: “The property was sympathetically designed to look like the 1724 original. It even won a North East Civic Trust Award. We bought the property soon after and were in the wonderful position of having a blank sheet to work with. We loved the opportunity to have a beautiful home with amazing potential to develop the gardens.”

The original stables were built to service nearby Acton Hall. With 17 acres, the estate was perfect for Fiona, now 29, to ride and breed horses. The couple also added an equine block which mirrors the design of the property.

The gardens, which John and Lynne have worked tirelessly on over the years, are spectacular.

“The walled gardens are extremely sheltered and we have our own micro climate,” said John. “We seem to have extra months of warmer weather. We can grow lots of exotic plants like hibiscus, yucca and lotus palms. We are extremely keen gardeners and visit lots of formal gardens for new ideas.

“The land and gardens are so diverse and have clearly defined zones – from open pasture and dense woodland, to formal and natural gardens – all on one site. There are also three pond areas ranging from formal to natural. It’s a lot of fun to be there. It’s also a haven for wildlife. More than 50 species of birds visit the gardens.”

The main house is equally impressive and includes an entrance hall with hand-painted stone-effect walls and wrought iron staircase leading to the first floor and tower. There is a large drawing room with African slate floor and open fire. With French doors to the rear garden, the room is ideal for entertaining.

The dining room overlooks the courtyard and includes a striking sandstone fireplace, while the family kitchen is the hub of the home. Other features include a sauna and a garden room with French doors to the courtyard.

“The house has a natural and practical finish with lots of timber and slate. One unusual factor is that it has a bridge in the living room connecting different areas of the house. There is also a spiral staircase which leads to the tower, which we use as a study,” said John.

The first floor has a master bedroom suite with dressing room and bathroom with roll-top bath, and three further bedrooms, two with en-suite. A big attraction is the guest wing, where Fiona lives. The three-bedroomed area can be self contained or incorporated into the main house.

John said: “The beauty of the house is how flexible it is. It will appeal to those who have an interest in outdoor life. We carry fond memories of it but we’re looking forward to new opportunities. We’ll always have a base in Northumberland, but we’re retired now and wish to travel as much as possible.

“It’s been an overwhelming experience living here. It’s a superb property and offers a fabulous lifestyle for those who enjoy the outdoors.”

Acton Hall Stables is for sale through Sale & Partners for offers over £2,250,000 tel: (01668) 281611.
