Seek out suburban style at Inglesyde

Nov 15 2008

by Mieka Smiles, The Journal

FINDING your “forever home” is certainly no easy feat. But surely harder still is finding it and then having to leave it behind?

After lavishing three years of love on this five-bedroom family home, that is exactly what the Wrights are set to do in order to develop teacher Paula’s theatre school for children.

What it does mean, though, is another family now has the opportunity to take on the refurbished property.

Paula, 30, who lives in the detached period property with husband Derek, 36, and one-year-old daughter Sophie, explained: “The house is very much a forever family home. When we bought the house, we had the intention of living there for life.”

The property – built in the early 1900s – is set within the heart of Low Fell on Kellfield Avenue, in Gateshead.

The Wrights have sympathetically refurbished the property to an impressive standard, as Paula explains: “We stripped things right back to the bone and started again.

“We put in new bathrooms, wooden flooring throughout the ground floor and added a conservatory.” But Paula says that the most work had gone into the property’s dream kitchen: “The biggest change we have made to the house was to the kitchen.

“Originally the kitchen was in the morning room but in the 1950s/early 1960s, a galley style kitchen was put into a flat roof extension. We demolished the extension and started again from scratch.”

The kitchen now has enough room to be the true heart of the home, with bags of space for entertaining.

It also includes underfloor heating, modern appliances, a double oven RangeMaster and integrated coffee machine.

And the extension in which the kitchen is housed blends seamlessly with the property, the stone taken from a quarry in Haltwhistle.

Paula said: “The work that has gone into it is of an extremely high standard and will last the next owners a lifetime. No expense has been spared.”

Living accommodation includes an entrance lobby, hallway, lounge, second reception room, sun room and stunning kitchen with snug.

There is also a cloakroom and a central turning staircase to first and second floors.

The first floor has the master bedroom, two double bedrooms, linen room, family bathroom and cloakroom. The second floor includes two further double bedrooms and guest shower room.

The property is set on an enviable corner plot. It has well-tended private gardens to the front and side with planted borders and mature trees and lawns.

There is also an attached double garage with gated off-street driveway parking for four cars.

Although the Wrights have given the property a plush modern feel, the new look works in harmony with the wealth of period features they have worked hard to retain.

Paula explains: “It has beautiful original features such as coving, the original banister over three floors and marble fireplaces throughout the house.”

Commuting is also a cinch, with Newcastle city centre just a five-minute car journey away.

Paula doesn’t have any doubt that leaving the property behind will cause heartache, but the pair are keeping their eye on the future: “We have had a golden opportunity that, in the long term, is going to be better for us.

“But despite that, there really is no doubt that there will be tears on the day we leave.

“We love this property and are going to be extremely sad to leave it behind.”

Inglesyde, Kellfield Avenue, Low Fell, is for sale through Sarah Mains with a guide price of £695,000, tel: (0191) 487-8855.
