Historic town offers the perfect stress-buster

Oct 4 2008

by Aranda Garrard, The Journal

The villages and towns surrounding Hexham are very much part of an extended community. Aranda Garrard finds out why the area is so popular with homebuyers.

WITH a piece of history reaching out to you wherever you go, the postcode area of NE46 has a wealth of intriguing features with which to charm homebuyers.

But with little over 6,618 homes, owning a property in such an exclusive spot can be expensive. The average value of a typical property for this postcode district is around £211,827. So it’s not surprising that the majority of property is owned, and many who move here are professionals looking to escape the city.

Flats make up only 13% of property types in the area, while the most commonly-found house type is the semi-detached home. The towns and villages remain popular for families with children.

Hexham has a magnificent abbey, which towers above its Market Place. It also has a monthly farmers’ market and architecturally-pleasing Moot Hall. The Old Gaol museum has an amazing array of artefacts on display, while there is plenty to see and do for those who like the great outdoors. such as a golf course.

For those who want to retire to the peace and tranquillity of the countryside, the towns and villages surrounding Hexham offer up a perfect solution – and there are unusual place names, such as Wall and Once Brewed.

Wall is steeped in history with a traditional green, war memorial and surviving buildings, originally bastle houses.

At nearby Fallowfield Fell, the only evidence of its mining and quarrying past are the faint mounds and depressions left in the ground.

While the area’s industrial past has been wiped out, its Roman heritage, in the form of Hadrian’s Wall, can still be seen for miles around.

Other places of interest include nearby Slaley Hall Hotel, a symbol of Edwardian elegance. The hotel is home to two golf courses and has plenty to offer its guests, including a leisure club and spa, restaurant, fishing, archery, quad-biking and hot-air ballooning.

The picturesque town of Corbridge is also a popular weekend haunt, with its vast expanse of farmland, good pubs and restaurants, art galleries and shops.

Christine Finch, branch manager of Pattinson in Hexham, said: “Hexham has some beautiful old buildings such as Hexham Abbey and the Old Gaol – one of the first jails in England.

“The town has seen numerous battles throughout the Border wars and War of the Roses. Thankfully it’s a little more peaceful now and is a lovely market town.

“The covered market is still very much a key attraction and it’s a fantastic showcase for all sorts of local produce, notably meats, cheeses and ales.

“The villages and towns which surround Hexham are very much part of an extended community.

“They include Acomb and Bellingham to the north and Corbridge, Riding Mill, Stocksfield and Wylam to the east. Haydon Bridge, Bardon Mill and Haltwhistle are west of Hexham and Allendale is south.”

“The area has retained its popularity with buyers, although each village has its own character and individual feel. A key reason for its popularity is the ease of access it gives commuters and young families to towns and cities such as Newcastle and Carlisle, and up to Scotland.

“In addition to that, Hexham has good schools and retailers such as M&S, while retaining a warm village high-street feel, and has leisure facilities such as Wentworth Leisure Centre, a new swimming and sports complex.

“Whether people are looking for a period property to retire to, or young families looking for new-build homes and apartments, we’re lucky enough to have an excellent range for all tastes.”
