Discover the timeless treasure of Well Close

Nov 8 2008

by Karen Wilson, The Journal

HIDDEN away behind a high stone wall in the centre of Rothbury is a beautiful period country house that hasn’t changed hands for almost 50 years.

Owner Anthea Wilbie-Chalk, 71, has finally decided to downsize.

“It’s surprising how many people have walked past for years and don’t know the house is here,” she said.

The substantial property was built in the mid 1800s with later additions at the sides and rear. The generous grounds of almost two acres also include a self-contained two-bedroom holiday cottage.

“It’s a big flat lawn so it would be great for a family with children,” added Anthea, a retired social worker.

The house has been remarkably well preserved since Anthea’s late husband bought it in 1960. Although there is scope for a new owner to put their own stamp on the property, it has an abundance of original features and character.

“Being an architect, one of the things that attracted him was the proportions of the rooms,” said Anthea. “He wasn’t a moderniser but he enhanced the house, opening up the hall a bit and making it into a very comfortable house.”

With so much flexible space, the house has proved adaptable to the family’s changing requirements over the years. One room became an architect’s office and when Anthea’s elderly mother moved in, a wet room was added on the ground floor.

The ground floor includes a large drawing room measuring 24ft by 15ft 11ins, a formal dining room, study, kitchen, utility and two cloakrooms – one with shower. The generous hallway makes a light and welcoming entrance.

One of Anthea’s favourite rooms is the dual aspect drawing room as she loves looking out to the garden from the big bay window.

Upstairs there are six large bedrooms plus a box room and bathroom. The largest measures 23ft 10ins by 16ft and there is certainly scope to re-arrange the layout in order to accommodate a further bathroom or en suite.

The holiday cottage has two interconnecting bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and bathroom.

Originally from Corbridge, Anthea loves Rothbury and doesn’t plan to move too far.

“It’s a marvellous area with a rich mixture of people,” she said. “There are a fair few retired people – movers and shakers with lots of energy. There’s lots to do and I have a good social life. It’s handy for the coast, Borders, Kielder and Hexham as well as being convenient for access into Newcastle.”

Now Anthea lives alone, and despite visits from her four grown-up step children and their families, she feels it’s time the house became a family home.

“Everyone who lives here seems to get quite attached to the house,” she admitted. “My husband bought the house from two elderly ladies. It’s taken me quite a long time to come to terms with the idea that I would have to move. I’m really hoping for a family to come along and really enjoy it.”

Well Close, Rothbury, is for sale through Sanderson Young at a guide price of £895,000, tel: (01665) 600170.
