Charming area in high demand with families

Jun 7 2008

by Aranda Garrard, The Journal

With its traditional village charm and architectural elegance, Whitburn is a honey pot area for homebuyers. Aranda Garrard discovers why it’s sought-after among families.

LYING on a beautiful stretch of coastline between South Shields and Sunderland, the traditional and close-knit village of Whitburn occupies a prime position to attract buyers.

The area has both charm and character, with its village green and pond, and is sought-after among families with children due to its excellent schooling.

The pond is one of the village’s historic features, filled naturally by water from Boldon Flats and Cleadon Hills, it was once used to wash coaches, and, in days gone by, the white building opposite was used as stables.

Front Street is one of the most sought-after and prettiest places to live in the borough, with its stone-built, detached period properties, alongside its traditional shops.

The area is perfect for anyone who likes coastal and country walks. Nearby places of interest include Souter Lighthouse and Marsden Limekilns, which are a reminder of the area’s once industrial past which included coal-mining, farming and quarrying limestone.

Limestone quarried at Marsden was used to build Whitburn Windmill and other buildings.

There was a mill on this site as far back as 1779. The mill would have once ground corn for the community. By 1896, the mill was made redundant, though its tower was used as a look-out point during the Second World War.

These days, the average price of a two-bedroom property in the postcode area of SR6 is just less than the national average of £187,894 at £184,246.

Many people who live in this area are employed in the wholesale and retail sector, followed by the construction industry.

Maureen Nichols of Andrew Craig estate agents, said: “Whitburn appeals to all type of clients from first-time buyers and growing families, to the professional executive couple who want to be close to the busy, hectic lifestyle of the city of Sunderland, yet still living within the village.

“Whitburn is steeped in local history and is within walking distance of Cornthwaite Park, which has won Britain in Bloom awards, has tennis courts and a bowling green.

“Whitburn Cricket Club, East Street, Whitburn is popular, and the area is home to one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the North East with views on a clear day to the Cleveland coast.

“You can walk along the cliff tops to Souter Lighthouse, Marsden Grotto, and beyond to South Shields, which are all maintained by The National Trust.

“Alternatively, you can stroll along the Seaburn promenade or wide sandy beaches towards Roker Lighthouse, and beyond that towards the marina with its cafés and restaurants.

“The area is close to schools and all local amenities, including a Morrison’s superstore.”
