Around the region - Ponteland

Feb 28 2009

by Aranda Garrard, The Journal

With its characterful old village feel, community spirit and celebrity residents, it’s no wonder Ponteland has such kudos. Aranda Garrard finds out more.

THE historic village of Ponteland has plenty to offer the more affluent buyer.

The charming village centre is only a couple of miles from Newcastle International Airport, and links to the village are excellent, with the A1, A696 and A69 close by.

The area is ideal for families seeking a characterful spot that is within easy reach of Newcastle city centre.

There are a number of independent shops, restaurants and pubs, including The Diamond Inn and The Blackbird.

The Blackbird is rumoured to have an old tunnel connecting it to St Mary’s Church. The tunnel is supposedly bricked up behind the fireplace in the Tunnel Room.

Throughout the year, Ponteland hosts a number of events, including an annual wheelbarrow race, party in the park, spring ball and duck race.

Peter Dawson, branch manager at Pattinson in Ponteland, said: “Ponteland has a fantastic reputation, which has been built up for a number of reasons.

“First and foremost, its location is ideal for those wishing to reach Newcastle city centre, Tyneside’s commercial centres and the airport quickly through excellent road links.

“It’s also very well served by a full range of local amenities, including supermarkets, shops and popular restaurants.

“The area is very attractive to families, those looking at retirement options and, increasingly, first-time buyers with some excellent opportunities available at the moment, both in the sales and lettings markets.

“As a result, customers are often surprised at the good mix that is available, so we’re encouraging both buyers and sellers to pop in to have a look at what we can do for them.”

The affluent housing estate of Darras Hall nearby is a wealthy area on the edge of Ponteland.

It is a popular choice for many of the North East’s rich and famous and many people associated with Newcastle United Football Club live, or have lived on the estate including Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins and former Liverpool footballer Terry McDermott.

Mark Walker, of Rook Matthews Sayer’s Ponteland branch, said: “With its vast array of local amenities including a sports centre, golf course and first, middle and high Schools, Ponteland is one of the most desirable locations to live in the North East of England.”

And now multi-million pound plans have been unveiled to transform the heart of Ponteland further. The ageing Merton Way shopping centre and surrounding land could be transformed if plans to create retail units, cafes and flats are given the go-ahead.

Things get better and better.
