Around the region: Heddon-on-the-Wall

Mar 28 2009

by Aranda Garrard, The Journal

With its stunning countryside, amazing history and traditional dwellings, Aranda Garrard finds out about Heddon-on-the-Wall.

POPULAR with those retiring, but also for anyone wanting to be within commuting distance of Newcastle’s city centre, Heddon-on-the-Wall offers the best of both worlds.

With one of the best stretches of Roman Wall on offer in a village setting, the area offers a wealth of history on the doorstep.

Because of its popularity, Heddon-on-the-Wall not only attracts homebuyers in their droves, but also plenty of visitors, who are drawn to it because of its natural beauty. With rolling fields and countryside, the area is popular with ramblers and families with a love of the great outdoors. Over the years, the village has played host to a number of industries, including salmon fishing, rural agriculture, coal-mining, limestone quarrying and also brick-making. And with a thriving community spirit, there are plenty of local groups within the community to join, including the Heddon Stitchers, for those who enjoy needlecraft, the Ad Muram singers and Heddon Art Group.

St Andrew’s Church is of Anglo Saxon origin, consecrated in 630AD. In addition to St Andrew’s, there is also a Methodist Chapel. There are a small number of shops, a library, two public houses (The Three Tuns and The Swan) a petrol station and a primary school. It boasts the oldest Women’s Institute in Northumberland.

There are also plenty of things to see and do in the area, from exploring the Northumberland National Park, Cheviot Hills, Kielder Forest to the Scottish Borders.

Heddon Village Show takes place around September each year and has a variety of events to take part in, from a scarecrow competition to flower arranging. Nearby places to visit include Brocksbushes Farm Shop, the Vallum Tearoom and Farmshop with its well-known homemade ice-cream, and Highhouse Farm Brewery.
