Quiet community is handy for urban hub

Apr 25 2009

With a rich choice of shops, restaurants and bars, Birtley has much to offer those who like everything close at hand. Aranda Garrard discovers more

by Aranda Garrard, The Journal

ONCE home to farming and heavy industry, Birtley has grown out of its roots to become a sought-after place for families to set up home.

This hidden gem is home to a growing number of commuters, who like being close to Newcastle and Gateshead, while having the benefit of living in this quiet backwater.

The village, although arguably a town today, is in the postcode area of DH3.

From its 1930s two-bedroom terraced properties to luxurious new-build houses, the area truly has something to suit all tastes and budgets.

There is a medical centre, swimming pool and vast array of shops in the centre of Birtley, and three schools with excellent reputations.

Many large companies have bases on the town’s outskirts, while the area retains its parish heritage through its three churches.

Although part of the metropolitan borough of Gateshead, Birtley still lies within the historic boundaries of County Durham and therefore retains a County Durham postcode, making it a popular spot for people of both boroughs.

Birtley’s grandest 19th Century house was Birtley Hall, built before 1828. Standing near the south end of the village, where playing fields are now, near the golf course, the hall was demolished in about 1916.

Marilynn Charlton of Sarah Mains Residential in Low Fell says: “Birtley is a great example of how the North East has developed as a place to live – it has the most eclectic mix of homes representing many eras throughout our region’s history, as well as the modern homes that are very much in demand.

“In original Birtley, purchasers can pick up a terraced two-bedroom house for under £100,000.

“Further up the price ladder is a choice of homes in Beamish View and Bewicke View. This is a whole new part of the town and is made up of modern family homes. Prices range from £275,000 up to £350,000 here for a three- or four-bedroom family home.

“A popular area of Birtley that many people from Low Fell are relocating to is Northside. Anything that comes on to the market in this area sells quickly.

“Birtley town offers many facilities and Lord Lawson of Beamish Community School has an exceptional reputation. There is also an excellent garden centre in Birtley, as well as a mix of shops and supermarkets.

“It is also only a short drive to The Galleries in Washington, where there is a shopping centre and retail centre with many big retail names.”
