A true sense of history

Oct 25 2008

by Mieka Smiles, The Journal

THIS beautiful Georgian town house is sure to raise the heart rate of those with a penchant for period properties.

Hank and Vicky Jansen, 46, have lived in the property for four and a half years and during that time have done their very best to return the Grade II Listed property to its very finest.

Now the pair are looking to sprinkle some magic on another property project, meaning it’s time to move on from their little piece of Morpeth history.

Photographer Hank, 45, told homemaker what first attracted him to the property. He said: “Surprisingly enough, it was the landing! When we were looking at the particulars online, one of the photographs showed the first floor landing. The views from the landing are over the river and are just fantastic.”

But, as well as the landing, the property has plenty of space for a growing family.

The ground floor includes an entrance hall, reception hall with cloakroom and boot room, cellar, dining room, study – at present used as a fifth bedroom – breakfasting kitchen and utility room.

As well as the much-trumpeted landing, the first floor also includes a 20ft living room, master bedroom with en suite shower room and second bedroom. The second floor has two further bedrooms and a family bathroom.

The property includes a south-facing patio with steps leading down to a garden. It is convenient in terms of commuting, being just a 20-minute drive from Newcastle International Airport. Hank said: “The property itself is more than 300 years old and steeped in Morpeth history.

“The door at the front of the house is framed by two pillars. It is believed that the house may have once been owned by a wealthy ship captain or owner and the pillars may have been part of his ship’s masts.

“There are also a lot of original Georgian features such as fireplaces, doors and cornicing.

“The staircase is an outstanding feature and is written into the original Listing.”

The pair have made many improvements to the stone-built property, not least rebuilding the front of it.

Hank said: “When we bought it, it was in a shocking state. As well as the outer stone front wall, all of the lintels and sills have been replaced.

“After the work, the house looked like it was standing taller.

“We have really looked after the building and tried to take it back to what it should have looked like.”

Hank revealed his favourite parts of the property: “My favourite room has to be our bedroom, simply because it is enormous. But another favourite is the sitting room, where you can just sit on a quiet day, read the newspaper and have the luxury of fantastic views.”

He added: “We have our eye on another building project so hopefully that will be our next step. But we do have mixed feelings about leaving behind such a lovely house.”

105 Newgate Street, Morpeth, is for sale through Rook Matthews Sayer at £595,000, tel: (01670) 511711.
