Delightful eco-home for sale in Northumberland

Oct 31 2009

by Francesca Craggs, The Journal

IT’S not every day you find a North East property with the pedigree to stand up to Arctic conditions, yet remain cool in the summer. And one that’s eco-friendly yet stylish.

Jacqui and Paul Ryalls built their eco-friendly log property in Hadston, Northumberland, five years ago. Painstakingly designing its interior, the house has been a labour of love for the couple.

Jacqui said: “We were the first people on site, in 2004, and spent two years living in a caravan with our greyhound, Bailey, and a cat.

“The house is one of 16 log homes. The outer shells were the same, but the interiors were a blank canvas. We decided where we wanted walls, doors and windows, and designed the space to suit individual needs.”

Built from logs grown in Lapland, the property offers spacious and versatile accommodation.

“We wanted to retain the sense of space,” Jacqui explained. “The lounge and dining room have high cathedral-style ceilings which are just awesome. Wood is so warm. We’ve hardly had the heating on.

“There’s a difference between a log property and a wood-clad property. This house is made from 200-year-old logs. Because they were grown in Finland, they are very slow growing. The rings show the age of the tree and are very close together, keeping the property cool in the summer and warm in the winter,” said Jacqui.

The property opens into a hallway with feature window. The spectacular open-plan lounge/dining room, with an abundance of natural light, has views over the garden. There is also a fitted kitchen area.

Jacqui said: “There are many aspects of the house I love. The big windows give it a real sense of space. You are always in touch with the elements. It’s lovely to be inside when it’s raining or when the sun is coming up. I love to sit and look out at the waterfall and the pond.
