Working together to raise quality

May 8 2008

by Karen Overbury, The Journal

Best Partnership Project

PARTNERSHIP projects are an increasingly important way of breathing new life into neglected areas and raising the quality of homes to help to bring better living conditions, a community feeling and, often, a reduction of crime.

Partnerships bring a variety of parties together to provide funding, ideas, experience and expertise. The scheme at Cleadon Vale has successfully transformed a run-down estate.

The main challenge was to begin a large-scale redevelopment of an existing estate, to provide a truly integrated community. The judges praised the approach of the scheme, to provide a range of homes with home zones to promote a safer environment and an eco-friendly emphasis.

Crime figures have reduced dramatically and more than 100 training and apprenticeships, targeted at local people, were also put in place.

Bellway North East regional sales director Rob Armstrong said after the awards: "We are particularly proud of the scheme at Cleadon Vale, successfully transforming it into an attractive large-scale development that breathes new life into the area. For Bellway to be recognised once again in the 21st Century Living Awards, this year in the Best Partnership category with both first place and a runner-up place, is an honour that highlights that our redevelopments at both Cleadon Vale and Ochre Yards have provided a range of homes favourable to many.

"This award is an achievement that the whole team in the North East can be proud of and reflects Bellway’s expertise in building family homes and effectively managing the land resources available."

Runners up

Bellway Homes, Nomad E5: Ochre Yards, Gateshead.

THE 21st Century Living Awards judges felt that the Ochre Yards project, on a brownfield site close to the hearts of both Gateshead and Newcastle, was well-conceived and an impressive coming- together of two partners to create a good shared ownership scheme.

The project showed good attention to detail in the properties and good consideration had been given to the scheme to create attractive, desirable and affordable homes.

Haslam Homes, Yuill Homes, Nomad E5, Gateshead Council: High View Phase II, Blaydon, Gateshead.

THE judges felt that the development was a good regeneration of a declining estate.

They praised the high emphasis on employment, training and environmental concerns, all of which were proving to be of great benefit to the home buyers and the community. There was a good selection of quality house types to appeal to a variety of people.
