Emphasis on good design and value

May 8 2008

by Karen Overbury, The Journal

Best Starter Home

THE need for quality, affordable properties for those wanting to make the important step on to the property ladder is vital for the future of the North’s housing stock.

The Admiral, built by Holystone Homes, won the Best Starter Home category.

The judges praised the development, saying the overall design fitted in well within the village.

The Admiral was seen as a particularly impressive starter home – good value, with good use of space, excellent detail, good storage and a practical design created for living in.

Alan Lowery, regional construction manager of Holystone Homes, said: “Holystone Homes is delighted to have won. The competition was stronger than ever this year and being a relatively small house builder makes this achievement even more satisfying.

“The starter home has become a vital area of house building due to the state of the market and we will be investing in it heavily during the foreseeable future. Our aim is to provide quality, affordable homes with an emphasis on good design, excellent use of space including good storage and practical layout.

“We believe the coming year will be an even more challenging one and all of the region’s house builders will need to raise the bar to achieve success in these increasingly competitive and much sought-after awards.”

Runners up

Persimmon Homes Teesside: The Monkton, Deerness Heights, Crook, County Durham.

THE Monkton was praised by the judges as an attractive home firmly aimed at the first-time buyer or down-sizer. The property was well constructed and potential buyers considered in the internal design. Space had been used well and value for money was an important consideration.

Yuill Homes: The Vermont, St Cuthbert’s Mews, West Lane, Middlesbrough.

YUILL’S Vermont is a value-for-money home with good space and good consideration given to storage and useability. The judges said this was an attractive home inside and out. It was a flexible property with good fixtures and fittings, ideal for a variety of buyers but within affordable reach for the first-time buyer.
