ALONG time ago only royalty could afford purple dye which is how it came to be associated with kings and queens. Happily for us, though, things have changed and now we can all afford a little purple in our lives.
For me purple is the colour of contemporary luxury. Combined with steel or dark wood it’s a great colour for a bedroom or sitting room.
Feature walls are starting to become a little old-fashioned now so be brave and paint or wallpaper the whole room. The shade you choose depends completely on your tastes. For a light and airy look go for violets and lilacs; for a dramatic and sumptuous look choose a much darker shade.
My favourite wallpaper store wallpaperdirect.co.uk lets you search by colour which is handy. They have a lovely range of papers from floral to the slightly more quirky.
Lighter shades such as lilac match well with large floral patters but opt for contemporary style furnishings such as the Fergus coffee table, made up of steel and reclaimed wood.
