Personal touches

Jul 31 2010

Once you’re through the front door, you know your time is your own. Claire Hornby takes a look at some home comforts.

by Claire Hornby, The Journal

WE’VE all had days where everything seems to be going wrong no matter what we do or how hard we try.

However, it is days like these which make us appreciate coming home all the more. Once you’re through the front door and you know that your time is your own, even if you do mess up a little there is no one to witness it except you and your nearest and dearest.

I always encourage people, despite the trends that come and go, to inject as much personality into their home as possible; visitors should instantly recognise parts of you in your home.

It is this which reminds us at the end of those long days who we are and what we are about. Homes can have a sense of humour, be intelligent or warm just like people – it all depends on the finishing touches we choose.

In my own home the various rooms reflect the different sides of my own personality; in my sitting room I’ve tried to reflect my more grown-up side with the elegant Jolanda sofa and shades of grey, black and cream.

The kitchen, on the other hand, is a mish-mash of bright colours and fun designs to satisfy my more eccentric side.

Homes should be a place for objects we love and the things that make us happy.

Why put up with the mundane when even the simplest objects can fill us with joy?

If your house isn’t in tune with your personality, then it’s time to make a change. Start by decluttering and getting rid of those unwanted gifts and infinite number of things that we never use but for whatever reason refuse to let go of.

Ebay is a godsend for making money from things that you never use and you can put whatever money you do make to buy something which you will cherish forever, whether it be an item of furniture or a simple accessory.

Aside from decluttering and investing, there are some instant ways to make your home even more welcoming after those off-days.

Firstly it’s amazing what changing the photographs in picture frames can do. We get so used to seeing them that we forget to really look at them.

It is also possible to paint a section of wall in blackboard paint. Not only is this great for scrawling on your shopping list, it’s a great place to write phrases which inspire you or make you happy which you can look at every day.

Hopefully by taking this advice you will see that a home should be a safe space, away from all the hassle, which welcomes you home and makes you smile at the end of the day.
