Plant lily bulbs outside where you want them to flower, or in pots for planting out later. Many shorter types are perfect for patio containers. Start pruning shrubs including Hydrangea paniculata, Buddleia davidii and Caryopteris x clandonensis. Plant out onion sets to their required spacing, usually 10-15cm (4-6in) apart along the row, with rows about 20cm (8in) apart. Remove rosette-type weeds, such as dandelion, daisy and plantain, with a handfork. Divide large clumps of herbs, replanting the smaller sections. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT Remove floating electric pond heaters when the weather warms up and danger of thick ice developing on the surface has passed. Plant new roses before spring. Prune winter jasmine after flowering. Finish winter pruning of gooseberries, shortening long side shoots and removing congested stems to create more open bushes which will have better air circulation. Cover rows of strawberries with tunnel cloches to encourage early flowering.
