Interior and Garden ideas for your home from Newcastle and the North East of England.

Moody and magical

May 10 2008

by Clare Jobson, The Journal

How we use light can dramatically alter the way a room looks. During the day it’s great to have a room filled with natural light, but there’s also nothing quite like a moody atmosphere when it gets dark. Clare Jobson reveals more.

MY first piece of advice is that if you have to go for a light in the centre of the ceiling, then make it interesting. Chandeliers are very fashionable right now and it’s easy to see why.

Hanging a chandelier gives a room instant “wow” factor and is the definition of class and glamour. If the sparkly diamond designs of the past aren’t your thing, then opt for the Pendant light from Barker and Stonehouse which will look just as elegant in more contemporary surroundings.

Lights such as this are great for making a statement and are best hung in hallways or above dining room tables where people can admire them.

For a different approach to the traditional ceiling light, opt for wall lights instead which will give a significant amount of light but will also make the effect of the light more decorative, creating shadows and circles of light on the walls.

As well as one of these two options, you may want to add in a few other lighting solutions so you can alter the look and feel of the room as and when you want to – simply by choosing different lighting combinations. Aside from being practical lamps, they are great-looking accessories. Add in a couple of table or floor lamps which can be switched on to give a dramatic impression when you have guests round.

Lastly, candles are great to add atmosphere. They give off a warm glow you just don’t get with electric lighting and look great en masse on tables and mantle pieces. Alternatively, go for a dramatic candelabra which will go perfectly with the baroque furniture designs available. Remember to add a mirror in smaller rooms to give the illusion of a bigger space.
