A William Hill customer has won £332,000 by backing Greece to win Euro 2004. The punter placed two bets at a William Hill branch in Woking - staking £4,000 on the Greeks at 50-1 on June 23 when they were 50/1 shots and returning to bet a further £8,000 five days later when they had been cut to 10-1. He then returned yesterday afternoon to place five more bets, totalling £12,500, making his total outlay £24,500 and his total returns £332,625. "We believe the man is Greek, which is not that surprising," said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. "But I expect we will soon be seeing him again and finding out just who he is." Hills had quoted Greece as 80/1 outsiders when the tournament began and say their triumph was good news for bookies who took a record £300million on the tournament, making Euro 2004 the biggest ever sports betting event. Hills offer Greece at 33/1 to win the World Cup. |
