Former Newcastle United defender Nicos Dabizas admitted it was his team's consistency that was the key to Greece earning a place in football history, following their triumph over Portugal in the Euro 2004 final. Angelos Charisteas' goal crushed the hosts' hopes of glory and crowned the Greeks surprise kings of Europe at the Estadio da Luz. "We may not be the most spectacular team but we have certainly been the most effective side in this tournament," said Dabizas. Greece had failed to win a game at a major tournament before their 2-1 win against Portugal in the opening match set them on an incredible journey that saw them oust defending champions France and title favourites the Czech Republic. "Our hard work has paid off," said the experienced Leicester City defender. "We deserved this title because we have been the most consistent throughout this tournament," "We are now the European champions and no-one can take that away from us." Otto Rehhagel's outfit lost only one game on Portuguese soil - against Russia in the group stages - and since then, success has followed. "We don't have stars," said Dabizas. "What we have are quality players that have joined forces and played at a high level." The Greeks' efficient performances relied on their ability to make the most of their chances while maintaining a stronghold in defence. Dabizas, who was influential in his national team finishing top of their group ahead of Spain in the qualifying stages, may have lost his regular place in the national team in Portugal but is nevertheless proud to be part of this winning-side. "This is the most important moment of my life," said the 30-year-old. "We will never forget this, our country will remember this moment forever." Dabizas admitted much of the credit should be given to Rehhagel. "Rehhagel has a different mentality," he said. "He changed the way we played, he showed us the importance of defence as well as making use of the chances that came our way. On many occasions, we have scored from set pieces." "He may have been criticised for his defensive tactics but he has proved what a great coach he is because he is a winner." Their achievement in Portugal has marked a new beginning for the Mediterranean country who has been given a major boost ahead of the World Cup qualifying stages, with Greece having to face the likes of Denmark, Turkey and Ukraine. "The important thing now is to maintain this level," said Dabizas. |
