Ryanair agrees on fat tax

May 5 2009

By Holiday Hypermarket

In a recent online survey carried out by Ryanair, a third of all passengers who voted agreed that overweight people should be charged more for their seats.

Around 100,000 people took part in the survey where holiday passengers were asked to vote on ideas for Ryanair to save, or make more money.

29% agreed on the 'fat tax', 25% said that they would pay £1 to use toilet paper with Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary’s face on it.

24% wanted to pay £3 for the privilege of smoking in a designated toilet cubicle, 14% thought paying to subscribe to Ryanair.com was a good idea, and just 8% agreed to a corkage fee for taking their own food onboard.

Spokesperson for Ryanair, Stephen McNamara said they were now conducting another survey to decide on the best way to implement the tax.

The options are:

Charge per kg for every kilo over 130kg (male) and 100kg (female)
Charge per inch for every waist over 45 inches (male) and 40 inches (female)
Charge per point for every point in excess of 40 on the Body Mass Index (+30 is classed as obese)
Charge for a second seat if a passenger’s waist touches both armrests simultaneously.

The idea has already been implemented in the US, but health experts in the UK have dismissed the idea as discriminatory.

McNamara concluded that it could be a great incentive for larger passengers to lose weight and feel healthier.

The online poll closed on April 29th.
