Winner: Joanne Miller, of Layfield Primary School Dedicated primary school teacher Joanne Miller is an inspiration to her young pupils. Miss Miller, a teacher at Layfield Primary School in Yarm, was nominated by a number of parents. One of them, Michelle Best, said Miss Miller was "a kind, patient and encouraging teacher who my daughter adores". She is always available to talk about any concerns and spends a lot of her own time for the benefit of the children and parents, says Michelle. She said: "When I asked my daughter what she liked about Miss Miller, the main thing that was obvious was how kind she was and how she makes learning fun. "She is always there to listen if there is a problem, is very understanding and always makes sure the children are confident in their work. "I believe Miss Miller deserves this award because on a daily basis she always goes that extra mile for the benefit of the children, not only in her class but for all the children within the school." --------------------------------------------------------- Runner up: Moira Leman, of Knoplaw Primary School Moira Leman is described as an "inspiration to generations of children". She has been nominated for an award by former pupil Meryl Stephenson, whose husband was also taught by her in 1972 when she had just left teacher training college. The Stephensons' daughter is now in her class. Moira is currently deputy head at Knoplaw Primary in Newcastle, and in her 34 years at the school she has contributed massively to the lives of hundreds of children. Mrs Stephenson said: "Miss Leman has a wonderful approach to her work and is a dedicated and truly special person in so many ways. "She has been invaluable to Knoplaw and helped make the fantastic school it is to this community. We are so lucky to have her - she is a one off." --------------------------------------------------------- Runner up: Michele O'Donnell, of St Joseph's RC Primary Michele O'Donnell's status as a "fantastic" teacher has recently been recognised by Ofsted. After an inspection at St Joseph's RC Primary in Newcastle, the lead inspector said that he had seen only seven truly outstanding teachers in 20 years and Michele was one of them. Michele's teaching abilities are rated highly by her colleagues, but her true worth is more than what she does in the classroom. Her pastoral care is second to none and she has made a huge contribution to her school over a long period of time. St Joseph's headteacher Elaine Mathews said: "Michele is amazingly generous with her time. "I still don't think I know the extent of what she does to help the people of this community." |
