Healthy Living Award

Mar 23 2007

By The Journal

Winner: Skelton Primary School

Skelton Primary School in Teesside is passionate about keeping its children fit in body and mind.

A community school for 533 pupils, it offers a huge range of fun activities, with every pupil enjoying two hours of PE a week, swimming, aerobics and a sports day.

Year Four pupils staged an Olympics as part of their Ancient Greeks study and there was even a circus skills day.

And to encourage healthy eating the school has a salad bar and awards for the healthiest packed lunch and school dinner choice.

Young minds enjoy the Brain Gym, study healthy eating, learn emergency life support techniques and an alternative therapist teaches relaxation.

The school also tackles the tough issues, such as anti-bullying, drug awareness and family breakdown.

Runner up: Brandling Primary School

Brandling Primary School decided to make the most of the land around their buildings after a staff visit to Norway convinced teachers of the wonders of outdoor education.

The Gateshead school has established a fruit and vegetable garden and also a quiet area for reflection which the whole school has access to.

Staff and pupils are this year hoping to add a sensory garden, bug dens and places for wildlife to support studies in different curriculum areas.

Teacher Lesley Hopkins said: "We have encouraged the local community to help with our project.

"With the help of local artists, we have painted murals and built a willow arbour. Should we win the bursary, we would hope to continue this creative development with the help of a local sculptor."

Runner up: Portland School

Portland School has stepped up the sport on offer to its pupils as part of a healthy living drive.

The school in Sunderland is applying for a Healthy Schools Award. It has also established a healthy tuck shop and a working party to monitor the progress of the scheme.

A whole-school basketball event involved parents, cooks and lunchtime supervisors as well as pupils.

Disability sport events open to pupils include cricket, tag rugby, girls football, athletics and swimming. Head of PE Shirley Gilfellon said: "Portland School has a high regard for the health and well-being of all within its community.

"The involvement in many disability sports events is particularly popular with pupils and members of the judo club have competed successfully at national competitions."
