THE NFU is calling on members to explain how the environmental steward schemes have worked for them – and what the future priorities should be in light of issues such as climate change – in a new survey being launched online. Defra is currently reviewing the Entry Level Scheme, the Organic Entry Level Scheme and the Higher Level Scheme to check they are delivering the objectives they set out to achieve since they were introduced two years ago. NFU vice-president Paul Temple said: “It is very important farmers let us have their feedback to tell us how these schemes have worked – or not – for them, and any changes they would like to see implemented. “We only have a month to gather feed-back but, as this summer’s floods demonstrated, if this extreme weather becomes more frequent then we need to have schemes that work for the environment, tackle the challenges of climate change and support viable business.” For the survey, log on to www.nfuonline.com |
