Defra delays moves to consult

Aug 9 2007

by Anna Lognonne, The Journal

FOLLOWING the recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, Defra has taken the decision to delay the issue of three major consultations.

The consultations that have been postponed are the Implementation of the Nitrates Directive, measures to address diffuse pollution from agriculture, and the Code of Good Agricultural Practice.

The NFU has welcomed the announcement, in light of the current situation.

A spokesman for the NFU said: “This is a difficult and uncertain time for farmers with much of the industry focus currently on efforts to control and eradicate the recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.

“The consultations will outline some important proposals that will impact on the livestock industry and farmers need time to give full consideration to the detail and implications.”
