THE organisers of Simonside County Fair yesterday promised there would be sheep at their show – but of a non-bleating variety. Determined that visitors to the Northumberland event this Sunday should not be greeted by rows of empty sheep pens, the organisers are encouraging exhibitors to make their own sheep for the competition. Competitors have three days to create their own sheep, from whatever materials they fancy and whatever size they like, for the show. And once the “animals” are placed into the pens, the organisers will decide on a series of classes for the models, with plenty of prizes up for grabs. Show organiser Louise Kirkwood said: “We have already confirmed that this year’s Simonside Country Fair will be taking place as planned on Sunday at Forestburngate, but minus the usual live sheep show and the alpaca display we had arranged – in accordance with Defra regulations due to the current foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. However the committee members all feel so sad at losing our animals that we have put our heads together over the last few days and decided that we are not going to be defeated and that we will have an ‘Alternative Sheep Show’ to cheer everyone up. “So we want everyone to put their creative thinking hats on and build their own sheep, to whatever size and design they feel appropriate, and bring them along on the day. Entries will be received from midday onwards and the Alternative Sheep Show will be judged during the afternoon with the Alternative Sheep on view to the visitors all afternoon. “There will be some prizes and of course the chance of local fame, if not exactly fortune.” Comment: Page 10 |
