Working Links

The opening of its new office in Newcastle has marked a major milestone for Working Links, the organisation which is working closely with the region's employers to help open up new opportunities locally.

Having already helped hundreds of people living in deprived parts of the region, the launch of its new office is enabling the organisation to reach even more jobseekers.

Working Links is a unique body which has a number of offices across the North-East. It specialises in helping people who have been out of work for some time and subsequently find themselves disadvantaged in the labour market. A further benefit is that, despite focusing on the individual, Working Links also has a great impact on the local community. Improving unemployment issues undoubtedly regenerates the area and boosts the local economy.

Colin Scott, regional director of Working Links, said: "The North-East is a fantastic region which offers many opportunities, but there are some challenges and there are still areas where a high number of people are out of work, many of whom survive on benefits alone and are living in poverty. There are ways of improving this situation and I am delighted that Working Links can be part of the solution."

Working Links, which was founded in 2000 specifically to address the issues facing long-term unemployed, has already helped almost 80,000 people nationwide return to work.

As a public-private-voluntary partnership between the Government's Shareholder Executive, Manpower, Capgemini and Mission Australia, Working Links is unlike any other employment provider. It combines the employment expertise of three sectors in one organisation and is designed to address the real needs of today's jobseekers and employers. Its increased presence in Newcastle and across the region means that Working Links can help more people in the North-East back into employment.

Each jobseeker is treated as an individual and solutions are developed for each person to overcome their own barriers to employment. Each person is assigned a personal consultant, who will then provide free advice and practical assistance to help them back into work. Depending on their situation, this may include advice on benefits, CV writing, interview skills and identifying employment opportunities.

In 2004, the company set up an independent charitable trust, The Links Foundation, which invests in valuable community projects in areas where Working Links operates. So far, the foundation has donated £1.2m.
