Browell Smith & Co is one of the premier firms in Newcastle for claimant work, and focuses particularly on industrial disease. The 'capable' Philip Browell heads the team, while Phil Davison is commended by clients as a 'skilled operator'.

Thompsons has carved a well-established reputation in the market for advising trades unions. The experienced team, which includes heavyweights Ian McFall, Robert Wood and Anthony Patterson, has expertise across the claims spectrum, which includes emphysema, bronchitis and asbestosis cases.

At Hay & Kilner, head injury expert David Bradshaw heads a team that continues to handle a number of complex head and spinal injury and industrial disease cases. The firm has particular experience in catastrophic claims, and deals with the full spectrum of claims from RTAs, employer's/public liability and sporting injuries, as well as injuries and fatalities in the armed forces.

Irwin Mitchell has a strong practice in Newcastle which benefits from its nationwide reputation and resources. The team regularly handles high-value, complex cases, including those involving head or spinal injuries. John Davis oversees the team and Roger Maddocks is also recommended.

David Allan has a good reputation for claimant personal injury work at specialist outfit Marrons.

At Russell Jones & Walker, practice head Philip Andrews is a member of the Law Society's Personal Injury Panel and the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers. Specialisms for the team include occupational disease work and catastrophic injury cases.

Robert Gibson at Samuel Phillips law firm is a familiar port of call for stress-related claims.

Sintons LLP successfully ramped up its claimant personal injury practice in the past year. James McCabe and Frank Matthewson jointly head the four-partner practice, which has a dedicated focus on claimant work, predominantly RTAs. The arrival of Mark Quigley has boosted the team by adding industrial disease expertise.

Watson Burton LLP has a strong practice in industrial disease and RTA claims. The `experienced' Ian Wanstall advises defendants as well as claimants, and also provides seminars to GPs and health professionals to raise awareness of personal injury issues. Doreen Reveley, who has a wealth of experience in handling bulk claims, heads the team.

Archers Law LLP has a solid track record of specialist industrial disease advice, with recent wins on claims for mesothelioma and vibration white finger. Angela Torrance heads the team.

Blaine Ward heads Blackett Hart & Pratt LLP's personal injury team, which has three full-time partners. High-value cases in 2005 included one relating to serious brain injuries, which resulted in a £4.3m settlement.

Burnetts and Cartmell Shepherd in Carlisle both have good reputations for claimant personal injury work, and Freemans also has experience in the field.

At union-focused Hough Halton & Soal, Andrew Kirkpatrick has an established reputation for handling complex claimant personal injury cases. Philip Walton heads a three-partner team at McKeags, with Patrick Rafferty recommended for his particular expertise in handling brain injury claims. The team dealt with numerous high-value catastrophic injury claims in 2005.

Personal injury boutique Gorman Hamilton Solicitors has a breadth of experience in advising claimants, and Mincoffs Solicitors LLP also has significant claimant personal injury capability.

Roger O'Donnell heads a team at Ward Hadaway handling volume industrial disease cases.
