Employment

By The Journal

Dickinson Dees has a 'capable' five-partner team, headed by the experienced Glenn Calvert. The firm has considerable strength on equal pay claims, senior executive terminations and tribunal advocacy. On the advisory side, the team regularly handles company reorganisations, redundancy schemes, TUPE and outsourcing, and also the employment aspects of PFI. A broad client base includes both the public and private sector: Nike, Bellway plc, University of Durham, University of Teesside and Reg Vardy plc are key clients.

Eversheds LLP has an excellent reputation for employment work, both on contentious matters, such as equal pay claims, and on the advisory side, which includes a commitment to client training. Michael Ord and Simon Loy both have outstanding reputations for their employment expertise. An enviable client base includes blue-chips such as Nissan, Tarmac, Walkers Snack Foods and Northern Rock, as well as an array of local government, health and education bodies.

David Hesselberth heads Ward Hadaway's six-partner team, which boasts three part-time chairmen in employment tribunals. A quality workload includes acting on equal pay claims for eight NHS trusts and local authorities; the team is defending over 1,000 such claims. A prestigious client base includes Newcastle Falcons, Malmaison Hotel and Wilkinson Sword as well as private companies such as City Electrical Factors.

Watson Burton LLP raised its game in 2005 with the hire of heavyweight Dr John McMullen, former national head of employment at Pinsent Masons. McMullen, who is based in the firm's Leeds office, joins Allan Henderson and `intelligent' advocate Paul McGowan, making a formidable team. It has considerable expertise in the education, engineering and construction sectors, and garners very positive feedback from clients.

Tony McPhillips heads a thriving three-partner employment practice at Robert Muckle LLP. In addition to advising high-profile individuals on personal employment issues, the team provides support to the corporate and commercial team and has expertise in defending contentious claims following TUPE transfers. Paul Johnstone is praised for his negotiation skills and ability to get results.

Short Richardson & Forth maintains its good reputation for employment work, continuing to act for an enviable client list including Fenwick department stores and Greggs plc. The `astute and thorough' Max Winthrop now heads the five-fee-earner team. Michael Short is a hands-on consultant to the practice, while Sharon Langridge has left to start her own practice.

Blackett Hart & Pratt LLP moves up the rankings this year in recognition of its sterling client base of major employers in the North-East. Graeme Ritzema heads the two-partner employment team.

Kevin McKernan heads the department at Crutes Law Firm, after the departure of Tim Smith. The team takes on both contentious and advisory work for its traditional public sector client base, but also increasingly acts for the private sector. Highlights of 2005 included conducting the successful defence of a discretionary redundancy scheme for a large multinational construction company.

The 'excellent' Neil Dwyer heads the two-partner employment practice at Hay & Kilner. The firm acts predominantly for employers, advising on the full gamut of employment matters, from equal pay to unfair dismissal. An established reputation for contentious expertise means that the team regularly garners heavyweight tribunal work. Clients are chiefly drawn from the automotive, pharmaceutical and health sectors.

The employment practice at Samuel Phillips Law Firm has continued to grow, under Robert Gibson. Clients to which the team provides both contentious and non-contentious advice include both large and small businesses in the North-East, as well as directors and owner-managers. The `renowned' Barry Speker is a part-time chairman of the employment tribunal in Newcastle.

Claimant firm Thompsons has a national reputation for providing timely employment advice to unions and employees.

Baines Wilson Solicitors acts exclusively for employers and is heavily focused on the corporate private sector. The team, led by Rayner Jones, has extensive geographical reach across the region, handling contentious work and advising on complex, `business-critical' scenarios.

Burnetts' John Morris has a wealth of knowledge on employment law issues; he is part-time chairman of the local employment tribunal and sits on the Law Society's Employment Law Committee. The two-partner team provides an employer audit service as well as handling contentious work.

Browell Smith & Co regularly provides employment advice to its predominantly trade union client base, while Gail Escolme at Hayton Winkley Kendal has experience of advising both employers and employees.

Hunt Kidd offers experience across a range of employment issues. Jane Jelly is the name to note.

Mincoffs Solicitors LLP's employment group advises employers and employees. Headed by Jonathon Stokes, highlights of 2005 included advising Aquaclear Leisure in relation to a new sickness policy and its implementation.

Sintons LLP has a solid client base of employers, continuing to advise learning skills group Assa and multi-branch travel agent Dawson and Sanderson, while Stefan Cross Solicitors has a good reputation for employment expertise.

The three-fee-earner team at The Endeavour Partnership LLP, headed by Julie Bruce, is focused on providing commercial, timely advice to business clients. Clients praise its employment law support package `Empathy'.
