Your guide to the region's top lawyers and legal firms

Crime

Sep 29 2006

By The Journal

The firms recommended in the table are highly rated for complex white-collar crime, rather than for the full scope of criminal work.

At Crutes Law Firm, Teesside-based Alison Shepherd is highly recommended for her work on high-profile cases. In a recent landmark judgment, the firm secured the acquittal of the first local authority prosecuted for corporate killing.

Hay & Kilner has considerable expertise in complex health and safety executive prosecutions and white-collar crime, as well as offences under the Trade Descriptions Acts. The three-partner team includes practice head Rob Hart, Gerry Bass and Mark Harrison, who are all experienced practitioners in the field.

Niche practices Forrester Solicitors, Pearson Caulfield and Stephens McDonald & Robson all have leading local reputations for crime, with Geoffrey Forrester, Lewis Pearson and Bradley Stephens respectively cited as key practitioners.

Ward Hadaway's Stephen Graham focuses on regulatory offences, for both companies and individuals. Clients rate Graham highly, with one commenting that he was `very knowledgeable about the particular issue concerned; he carefully guided me through all legal matters'.

Brown Beer Nixon Mallon specialises in RTAs, and David Gray Solicitors has significant crime capability. Jacksons Commercial & Private Law LLP also has a good reputation, as does Gerard Tompkinson at Russell Jones & Walker.

The `capable' Stuart Grant at Samuel Phillips Law Firm handles all types of criminal cases, in particular white-collar crime. The team also specialises in actions against the police and claims for criminal injury compensation.

Tilly Bailey & Irvine provides a first-class white-collar crime support service, under the guidance of John Ellwood, a leading criminal and licensing lawyer with higher rights of audience.
