Orange Bus takes Coastal direction

Aug 2 2007

by Iain Laing, The Journal

THE television company launched by Tyneside star Robson Green has picked a Newcastle IT business to create the internet showcase for its wares.

Julian Leighton of Orange Bus which created a website for Coastal Productions.

Newcastle-based Orange Bus has launched a website for Coastal Productions, which is well known for programmes including Rocketman and Wire in the Blood.

The Jesmond-based firm was selected to create a new site to showcase the TV company’s productions and provide opportunities for viewers to get closer to what goes on behind the scenes and to interact.

Coastal Productions, which was set up 10 years ago by Robson Green and Sandra Jobling, has enjoyed huge success with production and co-production credits, including the massively popular Wire in the Blood which is showing now, Rocketman, Take Me, Blind Ambition, The Last Musketeer and Touching Evil.

Production company websites are often created as one-visit information sources but the new Coastal site will change constantly and give viewers something they can return to time and again, with features such as out- takes, story boards and behind-the-scenes video blogs.

Co-director of Orange Bus, Julian Leighton, said: “We wanted to create a site that would attract people back over and over so we created ‘Inside Coastal’ – where people will be able to view all sorts of out-takes and behind-the-scenes photographs.

“We’ve also created the opportunity for Coastal to release exclusive material to coincide with the release of each production; for example there’ll be comments and opinions on selected episodes from key cast and crew which will only be published as piece-by-piece tasters according to the relevant episode of the current series.

“The site contains information, photos and videos from all the productions Coastal have been involved in, so it’s a great place for fans to hang out. We have noticed it’s been a very sticky site so far, which means that people spend a lot of time on it.

“The average visit length is currently five minutes – quite astonishing when you compare it with the average two minutes on the top 10 sites in the world.”

Orange Bus – which specialises in innovative web-based development and business solutions, boasts an enviable UK-wide client base including O’Neill, Cravens Advertising and Dean St Equity Management.

Robson Green, co-director of Coastal Productions, said: “A big thank you to Orange Bus for designing the new Coastal Productions website. The design and outlay, along with accessibility to the site, is beautifully simple yet incredibly effective.

“It is a reminder of how far Coastal has come over the past 10 years and lets the world know about the quality, diversity and high standard of Coastal’s programmes.”

Orange Bus has also won a contract to provide Standing Stone Productions with its corporate website and work with it on any future websites relating to its TV shows. Standing Stone was launched in the North-East early this year by award-winning TV executive Tom Gutteridge, responsible previously for shows such as American Idol and Challenge Anneka.
