Youngsters can get foot on the ladder

May 17 2007

By The Journal

The Young Firefighters Association offers young people the opportunity to get involved with fire and rescue.

There are five branches of the Young Firefighters Association in Northumberland and young people aged between 13 and 18 years old can get involved at the following fire stations:

* Berwick

* Blyth

* Ashington

* Hexham

* Alnwick

Being a Young Firefighter means taking part in firefighting training and activities like scaling ladders, working with the hoses and using special equipment.

Firefighting is a mental and physical challenge and Young Firefighters always work as part of a team.

In addition to learning how to tackle fires, a Young Firefighter can also gain lots of new personal skills like:

* Teamwork

* Leadership

* Self-confidence

* Physical fitness

Young Firefighters also have the opportunity to work towards a nationally recognised qualification called the BTEC Intermediate Award in Basic Firefighting Skills.
