Graduates who may not have considered working in the public sector are being encouraged to join a fast track system aimed at giving talented young people an insight into the jobs available in local government. The Local Government Talent Pool (LGTP) is a free online service that exclusively provides councils with access to a diverse range of graduates who have an interest in working for local government. LGTP is an easy-to-use, searchable database of potential graduate job applicants, a proportion of whom have undergone assessment as part of the national graduate development programme (ngdp) recruitment process. Once registered with the pool, a council is able to search the database and target graduates with specific skills, experiences and interests and invite them to apply for relevant job vacancies. The LGTP has already attracted nearly 600 graduates. As well as providing speedy access to talented graduates, it offers an opportunity for local authority employers to be more direct and proactive in their recruitment of graduates.
