Firms field the teams to help in our sporting life

Sport is an important area in the North because of the three big football clubs, Newcastle United, Middlesbrough and Sunderland. Peter Clark heads Dickinson Dees' team.

The firm acts for all three football clubs in the region, particularly for Newcastle United.

It advised Newcastle Falcons on the redevelopment of their ground and acted for Allied Irish Bank on the £30m securitisation of Everton FC.

Nike and FILA are other key clients.

Commercial head Ruth Connorton is Eversheds LLP's sports expert.

The firm wins a regular supply of work from Middlesbrough and acted for nirvana Europe on floating hotel accommodation for the Great North Run.

Alan Fletcher heads Robert Muckle's two-partner team. The firm had an excellent year, winning a considerable amount of work from Sunderland FC.

It also advised Durham County Cricket Club on plans for a a fitness club and further north, Motherwell FC on various disputes.

Ward Hadaway also receives a regular supply of work from Newcastle Falcons.

Gillian Hall of Watson Burton is an active sports lawyer. The firm acts for London Irish Rugby Club, Leyton Orient FC and Colchester United.
