Dominating market with its expertise

Sep 26 2003

By The Journal

Sunderland-based McKenzie Bell dominates its market, with a broad clientele throughout the region.

Bill Temperley is now the leading specialist in the region following the retirement of Mincoffs' Austen Science.

Mincoffs is in a period of transition in this area, but it remains one of the leading firms.

Austen Science's retirement in 2002 means that the firm's most experienced licensing lawyers are all now consultants - Mr Science, Tom Moss and Professor Michael Purdue.

Nonetheless, department head Sarah Smith has an excellent reputation and keeps the firm in its traditional tier.

Dickinson Dees is expanding its practice under the stewardship of Richard Arnot.

The firm acts for Scottish & Newcastle Retail Ltd and has recently gained Iceland as a client.

Freemans is a niche firm with a high-quality reputation in the area. Keith Freeman has experience second to none and acts for the Bass group nationwide.

Gerry Bass heads Hay & Kilner's licensing practice and has a strong reputation. The firm has a broad client base including hotels, public houses, restaurants, clubs and off-licences.

Tilly Bailey & Irvine is benefiting from the explosion of restaurants and bars around Hartlepool. John Ellwood has a formidable reputation.

Stephen Graham heads Ward Hadaway's licensing group. David Glendinning is also recommended.

The firm has experience of obtaining liquor, betting and regulatory licences.
