People have met here since the 13th Century

Jun 18 2007

By The Journal

Newcastle's historic meeting rooms are moving into the 21st Century, thanks to a £40,000 renovation. The meeting rooms adjacent to Blackfriars Restaurant were previously used by medieval Friars as their dormitory in the 13th Century and can cater for up to 40 people theatre-style or 30 boardroom-style with break out facilities for coffee and tea.

The refurbishment has been organized by local interior designer Emma Boyes, who was enlisted to create a contemporary look for the historical space.

The room features original paintings by local artist Ebony Andrews, depicting images of 13th Century life. The break-out room has a contemporary seating area and a wooden bar in the corner for refreshments.

Managing director of Blackfriars restaurant, Andy Hook, said: "A lot of companies have been using Blackfriars meeting rooms because they are the perfect place for an away day without having to travel too far. If you go to a conference and look out of the window at the trees and grass, it is a much nicer experience.

"Blackfriars is steeped in history and we've managed to retain that even after the renovation. As well as the fact that the restaurant can provide top quality food sourced from local producers so our conference facilities really are second to none."

The meeting rooms are managed by the team at Blackfriars Restaurant and standard equipment such as flipcharts, televisions, OHPs and screens come complimentary with each package. Specialist equipment can be arranged on request.

The restaurant can provide tailored menus for any event from buffets and sit-down meals to canapés, teas and coffees, with prices starting from £7.50 per person.

Blackfriars was recently voted Best Restaurant in the North East by readers of The Observer. It has an AA Rosette, is listed in the Michelin Guide and is featured in the Which? Good Food Guide.

Blackfriars Restaurant and Meeting Rooms is located at Friars Street, Newcastle, NE1 4XN, tel: (0191) 261-5945 or visit www.blackfriarsrestaurant.co.uk
