Greaves West & Ayre: a quality deal

May 18 2007

By The Journal

Agricultural taxation and accountancy specialists Greaves West & Ayre, based at Berwick-upon-Tweed, continue to expand to meet clients' and farming's ever-changing needs.

The firm has so far this year recruited nine people and promoted one of its managers, Craig Little, to partner.

New recruits include Pauline Gaskin, who will support clients on Sage accounts; Rosanne Bennett, a chartered accountant, and Hazel Young, human resources advisor.

The image of accountants has changed from that seen in the Monty Python sketches of the 70s. Clients used to see them as a necessary evil, to help keep the tax man happy. But much has changed in the last 30 years.

Greaves West & Ayre staff are no longer just reporters of information; they fulfil a much more pivotal, proactive role, working with clients to plan for the future and structure family, personal and business affairs.

The firm specialises in owner- managed firms, with a strong presence in agricultural sectors. Four partners have a farming background and the company sponsors the Farming in the North Diversification Awards.

As well as the North-East, the client base extends to Shetland and Kent, including expatriates.

Good advice and continuity of service is key, with each client having direct partner contact, supported by specialist staff.

As well as its core tax advisory department, it has specialist audit and assurance, commercial and agricultural accounts, payroll and VAT services. It has also expanded its financial advisory and IT departments. Its investment in staff training and development ensures its logo wording `Quality Advice, Quality Service' can be delivered over the long term. It is a tribute to this commitment that seven of the nine current partners underwent their training with the firm.
